Calling

I've been thinking all week about the idea of having a "calling". I think this is something I've always been somewhat obsessed with but maybe just never used the actual word "calling". I will say I've known for a long time that I was called to work in entertainment, but I do sometimes wonder if callings can change. Like can you have multiple callings for different times in your life?
An article was written for Boundless Webzine and it was called "Career vs. Calling" (their site is down right now so I can't link to it, but I'll update it later). In the article the author states, "The call of God is both universal and personal. He desires an intimate relationship with all of his creation-a universal longing that none would perish. Yet, when you heed that call, there is a deeper plan to discover-a specific assignment only you can complete; 'The Lord has assigned to each his task(1 Cor. 3:5)."
I love the idea that God has a plan specifically designed for me. I think the thing that gets me is that a calling should be one specific thing and if you aren't doing that thing then you are in the wrong. Does that make sense? Like you're missing out because you aren't doing what you are destined to do.
The article discussed how so many college students simply seek out a career and not a calling. He then walks through how to find your calling. This is something I think I'm really going to explore and seek in the next year. It was interesting timing since I was already thinking of exploring some new options in a couple of months and I kind of have a plan in place, this goes right along with it.
So what about you? Do you know your calling? How was it made clear to you? If not, have you even tried to find your calling? I'd love to know!

  1. Cassie,

Thanks for the post - I think this is a wonderful thing for people to be thinking about! It's also something that I think about a lot myself. Pastor and author Frederick Buechner describes vocation in his book "Wishful Thinking: A Seeker’s ABC" as “the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

For me, I just started seminary last year as I felt God calling me to ministry. This calling came through prayer, discernment and speaking with others. It also took people helping me to see my gifts and pointing out what my talents were. I think it's really important that we help point out to one another the gifts they've been given.

I also think that callings can change over time and that we need to be continuously reflecting, praying and paying attention so we can hear God's call in our lives.

Blessings on your journey and I look forward to reading more of your blog!

    Peace,
    Annabelle

P.S. - I blog about this sometimes, too and if you ever want to check it out, I'm at http://annabellepeake.wordpress.com/

  2. this is where i am in life right now. I can't say that I specifically know my calling because I feel like I have multiple things in me that I want to do. Right now I'm really praying and have been praying for GOD to make his path known and will for me clear.

I love acting and it brings me the most peace and joy and feels comfortable but I really want to minister in someway to young women in a way that empowers them and helps them to know their worth through the eyes of god. I just really want to know what GOD wants me doing NOW because school and work aren't what I'm desiring anymore which is odd because SCHOOL used to be my favorite place!

I have a strong desire to go to bible college and in some odd way I feel like that is where it will all begin but it is such a big risk and it doesn't make sense as of now with school and work?? ughh

    LORD MAKE YOUR WAYS KNOWN!

And i agree. When we're not in GOD WILL we don't have peace and I think that is what you meant by being in the wrong if your doing something your not called to do.

love this post! pray for me sister and also follow me if you wish!<3
