Thank God for the Spa!

Greetings from Santa Fe! Or really, 15 minutes outside downtown Santa Fe. Why we don't always stay in the middle of town I don't know. The hotel I'm at is okay. There have been a few annoyances already, but instead of complaining, let's talk about the one really good thing; the spa!
We got in really early compared to most of our trips so I had a whole afternoon to kill at the hotel since there's no easily accessible way to get to town. I found out the spa's amenities are free if you are a Hilton Honors member! (Um, of course I'm an Honors member.) So after spending an hour in the gym (because what else was I going to do), I headed to the spa.
The guy at the front was kind of rude but the girl working showed me around and was really nice. Plus, since it's not tourist season here in Santa Fe, there is nobody at the hotel so I had the spa to myself! Woohoo! Sauna? All mine. Steam room? All mine. Jacuzzi? All mine! It was great. The sauna felt so so nice. There's actually a sauna in my apartment building and in my five years of living there I've never used it. I may have to start.
So anyways, thank the Lord for the spa because it was a nice, relaxing treat in my day. I plan on hitting it one more time on Friday morning before I leave! Hopefully it will be a nice way to cap off this business trip.

Eating Right is Paying Off!

Okay, so after a weekend of eating only protein, the way the "Lean for Life" book says to, I have lost 3.5 pounds! Woo hoo! Today I get to add fruits and veggies and a grapefruit has never tasted so good! Plus, I get to keep my iced lattes so I'm totally surviving this. It is amazing how much better you feel when you don't eat junk. For reals.

Oh, and hello to all the Mingle Monday-ers! Hope you are enjoying the day off work as much as I am.

Adventures in Online Dating: Lesson Learned

So I did something stupid in my online dating adventure. At his prompting, I moved communication with a match from the safety of the dating website to my own personal e-mail way too soon. We had only finished the last phase of "guided communication" when he put his personal e-mail in the body of his last question answer and said he wanted to meet in person. The guy was cute and I had liked his answers (and he seemed normal) so I e-mailed him from my Yahoo account.
I thought it was strange that he took it off the site so fast, but he was the only guy I'd been really interested in so far, so I just went with it. I did say however I wasn't available to meet on the day he requested and asked to postpone a week just so I could get some more info in the meantime.
It took the guy a week to get back to me and it was the weirdest e-mail. His subject matter jumped all over the place and he made jokes that aren't funny when you don't know the person. Bottom line, he was coming off as weird. And then he ended it by telling me he had a third nipple and was planning on getting it removed sometime, but hope you can deal with that for now. Um, what? WHO TELLS THIS KIND OF STUFF!?!? I told my friend about this and she said he must have been kidding. I told her I didn't think so.
Well guess who was right? Yesterday morning I woke up to a lovely e-mail from said guy telling me that the reason I hadn't written back MUST be because of him telling me about his "mole" (now all of the sudden it's a mole huh?), and how awful a person I am for not being able to see past that. Then he said a bunch more weird stuff like how if I want to date someone famous that's fine but the famous guy won't love me and other non-sensical sentences. (Um, when did I say I wanted to date a famous guy? If I wanted to date someone famous I wouldn't be online dating.)
He jumped to all these conclusions that just weren't true. There was plenty in that first e-mail that told me he wasn't for me, not just his last tidbit of information. And THEN he had the nerve to say that he still wanted to go on a date. Oh yeah, I totally want to date people who berate me in e-mails. When should we meet?
All this to say, I will never jump to regular e-mail that quickly again. This weirdo now knows my full name. I'm lucky he's just strange but not dangerous. Also, all I can think now is, if this is what the cute, normal seeming guy turned out to be, how crazy are all the guys I end up deleting immediately?!?!
So ladies, no matter how interested and normal he seems, keep it online for awhile. Lesson learned.

Eating Prep Day 2

First off let me say it is SO time to go home from work and watch "Top Chef". And yeah, I am blogging from my desk. Whatev, my works done.
So anyways, did I mention that this eating plan I'm trying starts off with 3 prep days? It's 3 prep days and then 3 days of nothing but protein. Literally all protein, not even vegetables. I'm trying to not binge too much on these days and still eat whole meals, but there is a part of me that totally wants to go off the deep end and just eat a friggin' cheesecake! I will not succumb, I promise. If I do that means I would have that much more to lose.
I will say that even just 2 days into eating more vegetables and actual meals instead of just whatever I feel like here and there does make me feel better. And I discovered Trader Joe's chopped veggie mix that I just throw into everything. Last night I mixed a cup of chopped veggies with 3/4 pounds italian sausage (out of the casings) and then stuffed bell pepper halves with it. I baked them at 350 for 45 min. and they are delicious! Oh, I also sprinkled a little garlic powder in there as well.
My one treat for the day is going to be William-Sonoma Hot Chocolate for dessert because it is absolutely amazing! I'll let you know Friday if I'm having major withdrawals, but hopefully I can press on!

Gotta Get It Together

Alright, I have to confess. My eating habits have been HORRIBLE. It's time to get it together and start eating right again and exercising. I'm going to try that Lean for Life plan from Lindora that you can buy at Rite Aid. I know a few people that did it and lost a lot. Plus, I'm not supposed to eat carbs anyway so this should get me back on track. I even wrote up 7 days worth of meal plans on index cards to help me out this week.
Keep me accountable folks!

Adventures in Online Dating: Date #1

So, went on my first online date since signing up. These things shouldn't even be called dates, because really you're kind of just meeting to see if you even want to date. It's like a pre-date. Although he did pay and I haven't been on a date in quite some time, so sure, lets call it a date!
The guy was nice and conversation kept going (although I do talk a lot) but I wasn't attracted to him and he and I differ too much theologically which is important to me. But the biggest problem: He didn't walk me to my car. Okay seriously? This is a running theme with guys in my life. I'm going to title my book "He Didn't Walk Me To My Car". Why is this so hard to do? When did they forget this idea?
Well anyway, it wasn't a match but I kind of considered it a practice date for better things in the future. I didn't think it was going to turn into something anyway, so I'm not disappointed. Now it's time to move on to the next one...

Latte Withdrawal

Day 5 in New Orleans and there is not a Starbucks in sight! I'm dying to get to the airport tonight just so I can get a latte! They are my treat and I miss them. I will definitely also be going to Peet's tomorrow to get a yummy, yummy latte. They are my favorite!

Adventures in Online Dating: What Men Shouldn't Post

Alright, I've been online dating for about a week and I have a couple observations-things men post, but shouldn't. Actually, it's more of a question, like "Why would you post this?" Here they are in no particular order:
  • Why do you post pics of you finishing a race with your mouth wide open, looking all tired and sweaty? Yay! You work out, but that is not a flattering shot!
  • Why would you post 3 TIMES that you really can't wait to have children soon? You don't want a wife. You want a baby-maker.
  • Yes, you love to camp, hike and do anything outdoors, but do I have to? I like taking yoga and Zumba classes but I don't expect you to go with me.
  • Some hobbies you should keep to yourself-playing your tin whistle and "tending" to your pet turtle are things I don't need to learn about in your profile. ( I swear those are real hobbies and they were in the same profile. Poor guy.)
I could go on, but I'll stop there for now. Here's the thing; I realize that for every qualm I have about their profiles, they probably have at least one about mine. I'm sure all the girls are posting things they don't like as well, so I'm not trying to be judgmental. Just thought I'd let you all into my thoughts and observations that I have as I go through profiles. It's pretty entertaining even if I don't find the love of my life!

Just Say No to Criticizing

Hola Mingle Monday-ers!
Mingle 240
Thanks for stopping by. I'm in New Orleans for work all week, but God bless a hotel with free wi-fi!

I’ve been reading this book that tells me not to criticize. Very “judge, lest not ye be judged.” I know the Bible said it first, so yes, I should have been doing this for quite sometime, but this book was the first time I felt really convicted of it. That and it seems absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to do. How do you not criticize? Correction, how do I not criticize? I criticize everyone and everything including myself. I’m really going to try though. It is true that I’m not perfect either so what right have I, but man, that is a tough call. Trying to replace critical thoughts with kind, understanding thoughts is going to take a lot. And not saying anything critical? An act of God. That’s what that will take and that’s what I’m praying for.

I’ll let you know how it goes, but what about you? Are you a critical person or are you good at bestowing grace? And if so, any tips for me on how to do it?

Adventures in Online Dating: The Process Begins

Well, I decided I need to be more open to things and with that in mind I re-joined an online dating site. After my last try at online dating I swore it off and said I'd never do it again, but seeing as I'm meeting no one in my real life, I figure I should give it a whirl. I'm not going to mention which site I'm using because frankly, they're not paying me, but let's just say it has the longest application process in history. Seriously, I have a friend who applied for the FBI and I think she had to do less.
Anyway, I've been on it about a week and I have to say I've actually liked more matches than I thought I would. Here's the problem, they don't all like you back. I've started the initial step with quite a few matches and only one has gotten back to me. There's also one guy who initiated with me that I'm now at the e-mailing point with. And, irony of ironies, at least 10 of the men I've deleted or closed or whatever have all wanted to start communication. See, online dating isn't that far from the real world. It's very rare that the people you like like you back.
I'm going in this time with no expectations. Even at the e-mail point. I learned last time that just because they sound good in e-mail and you think you connect means nothing until you meet in person. Everything can change when you meet. Seriously, it's amazing. I still don't understand how people will allow matching across the U.S. and then fly to meet somebody! What if you have NO chemistry in person or they look nothing like their picture and you're not attracted to them! Too much risk!
I won't go on forever, but I will start writing about my online dating experiences, including tips, stories, and just observations I've made of what's out there. My friends are already enjoying the stories and hopefully you will too!

11 Things to Do in L.A. in 2011

Alright, I want to try things I haven't done in L.A. before so here is my list:
  1. Improv show at UCB-that would be Upright Citizens Brigade. I took classes at Second City last year, and while I LOVED it, I'm thinking of switching over to UCB. Plus, they have some shows I just really want to see.
  2. Slimmons exercise class-Have you heard about this? Richard Simmons actually leads the workouts and people I've talked to say they're fabulous and fun! I saw him once in the airport and he was a total drama queen, but only in L.A. can you take class from Richard Simmons.
  3. Eat at Formosa Café-I just feel that this is a classic L.A. spot and yet I've never been so I want to try it.
  4. Explore Eagle Rock-There are a lot of places in Los Angeles that I've only been to once or twice and could probably learn more about but I've NEVER been to Eagle Rock and I hear it's fun. I already know a restaurant I want to try and I hear the stores are cute.
  5. Coffee at 101 Coffee Shop-I can't even count the number of times I've driven by and "Swingers" was filmed here and to me that is an iconic L.A. movie that I treasure so I need to go.
  6. Concert at the Greek Theater-I want to go to more concerts and I've never been to the Greek and hear it's a great place to see a show.
  7. Rose Bowl Flea Market-It's supposed to be the greatest flea market and I want to haggle for deals on cute apartment stuff!
  8. See a midnight showing of “The Room”-if you've never heard of it, google it. It is supposedly the worst movie ever made and the midnight showing of it has become an "only in L.A." thing to do.
  9. Finally have dinner at Bazaar at SLS-I feel about 2 years behind but I really, really want to eat there. Jose Andres is a genius and I loved his first restaurant Zatinya in D.C. and really want to experience his molecular gastronomy.
  10. Explore downtown-it is the hippest place in L.A. now and I haven't really done much down there. I want to take an afternoon/evening and just explore. This will probably happen on an Art Walk night because I have friends that I know want to go this year.
  11. I'm leaving #11 open for now. I'm not quite sure yet what this one should be, but I will definitely decide and do it before the end of the year!
So there's my list. What do you want to try to do in your city this year?
